A Stitch in time - saving money and spending it wisely in your parish

As we plan how to use the resources God has provided for our church in 2009, how can we make sure we get the best value for those hard-earned pennies?

Here are some contacts to help -

Church Purchasing Scheme (www.cpsonline.co.uk)

The Churches Purchasing Scheme Limited (CPS) is a scheme designed to make your purchasing simple and cost effective. CPS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, which donates approximately £4 million each year to charitable causes.

Gift Aid

The scheme for recovering income tax paid by donors on their gifts to charity—the Diocesan Office (01904 699500) can help, advise, and provide free samples of envelopes.

Will Aid (www.willaid.org.uk)

Will Aid offers the opportunity to have your Will professionally drawn up by a solicitor, but instead of paying their usual fee you can make a donation to help some of the UK's best loved charities. This is a fantastic way to encourage people to consider making a legacy to their church, put their own affairs in order and at the same time help many thousands of people in need.

The Churches’ Main Committee (www.cmainc.org.uk)

The CMC is an ecumenical body bringing together the interests of Churches in their dealings with Government, and it also issues free circulars and advice on subjects including taxation, heritage grants, charity law and water charges, with much else besides.

VAT savings

May be available on new work in churches such as installation of public address systems in listed buildings. Advice is widely available, including from Sandra McLean at Howarth Clark Whitehill LLP on 0161 214 7521, sandra.mclean@howarth.co.uk . A fee is payable but is generally exceeded by savings (several PCCs have already benefited).

Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (www.lpwscheme.org.uk)

An interim grant scheme which returns, in grant aid, the difference between 5% and the actual amount spent on VAT on eligible repairs to listed places of worship.

Grants for church buildings (www.dioceseofyork.org.uk/dac)

Diocesan Church Buildings Officer Phil Thomas, who is also Secretary to the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches (DAC), can offer advice on bodies who may award grants for certain aspects of church care and development. Tel 01904 699523.
