Ruth O’Farrell died at her home in Scarborough on 29th July, just a few weeks after celebrating her sixtieth birthday.

Ruth has been general manager of Wydale Hall, the Diocese of York’s retreat and conference centre, since the spring of 2006. She was diagnosed with advanced cancer at the end of last year. Until her condition suddenly worsened a few days before her death, she was actively involved in Wydale’s work. Ruth’s husband D'Arcy and daughter Claire were with her when she died.

Paul Ferguson, Chair of Wydale’s Management Committee, said: ‘During the all-too-short time that she was at Wydale as general manager, Ruth combined huge enthusiasm, a wealth of experience in the hospitality business, and a deep commitment to Wydale’s purposes and potential. She believed passionately that Wydale has a great future as well as a proud tradition. Ruth and Graham Andrews worked together to design the extensive refurbishment that was carried out a few months ago, and so we shall have a lasting visible reminder of her vision.

‘Ruth’s hope and confidence in God shone in the months after she was diagnosed. During that time she faced the knowledge that she would die soon with faith, realism and courage.

‘Everyone associated with Wydale will miss her greatly. At this time we hold her family in our thoughts and prayers.’

Ruth’s funeral will be at Thursday 6 August at 12.30pm at St Martin’s Church, Scarborough, and will be conducted by the Ven. Paul Ferguson, Archdeacon of Cleveland and Chair of Wydale’s Management Committee.
