"You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new."

working practices | ethical policy

Our working practices have developed over the years. We have recently formalised a set of general principles to ensure all our clients are fully aware of what they can expect from us. The following summary outlines these principles:

Project Lifecycle

A simple 5-stage process applies to every project:

  1. Conception & planning: Initial meeting and brief; production of outline development proposal including proposed project content, quotation of costs, schedules and marketing strategies.

  2. Pre-production: Design prototypes supplied; navigation system, site architecture and useability profiles created; complete specification then approved and signed off by client.

  3. Development: Graphic design and programming commence with work in progress available to view using private 'staging server' where appropriate.

  4. Pre-launch testing: Upon completion of core design and programming a 'beta version' of the project is installed for technical testing and quality assurance.

  5. Site launch: Whether you require a discreet launch or the full blaze of publicity you can expect expert advise, a full range of marketing services and responsive after-sales assistance.

Development Standards

While the design and programming of each project is bespoke there are some non-negotiable standards to which all Salvo projects are subject:

  1. Accessibility and open technical standards: Salvo sites must comply with major accessibility standards and must function adequately on a broad range of software/hardware configurations. At the very least Salvo-designed sites will run on all screen resolutions of 800x600 pixels and over, will scale elegantly to other resolutions and will function on both PC and Macintosh versions of commonly used Netscape, Microsoft, Opera and Firefox web browsers. All our sites will also function in text-only 'screen reader' software. Optimisation for technologies, including TV browsers and PDA devices, can also be undertaken.

  2. User interface standards: Salvo websites must incorporate a user interface that provides structured and intuitive access to all site content. User interface designs must visually convey the current location of the user within the overall structure of the website and must not use abstract symbols or ambiguous terminology. Where ever possible user interface designs should utilise standard text to maximise accessibility.

  3. Search engine optimisation: Salvo sites should be programmed to allow search engine 'robots' to access and 'spider' all pages of the site. Pages themselves should contain the full range of 'meta' information to maximise the contextual effectiveness of search engine requests.

  4. Transparent asset ownership: Salvo must make it explicitly clear which elements of the finished project will be owned by the client and which elements owned by Salvo. As a guiding principle, ownership of all assets should be transfered to the client for use online unless copyright belongs to a third party or proprietary code has been developed in a programming language other than HTML. If the latter case applies full rights for the use of code in the context of the developed site should be granted to the client with rights for use of the code in any other context retained by Salvo. Regardless of these limitations, all finished source code, graphics, development files and architectural specifications should be supplied to the client for their records and/or for future use or modification. Salvo promise never to withhold such material or to impose further contractual limitations on its use.

Warranty

We guarantee to develop every site in accordance with our contractual obligations. Our Development Proposal will specify exactly what your system will contain and how it will operate; this document is the basis of our contractual promise to the client.

In the unlikely event of errors occuring after project completion we promise to correct them promptly and to re-apply all relevant testing procedures to minimise the chances of further problems.

If, during the course of a development, additional services or application features are required we promise to promptly supply a detailed quotation for the development of said features prior to implementation.
