The Chapter House, built in the Decorated Gothic style and octagonal in shape, was begun in 1260 and completed in 1286. Its walls contain some of the Minster's finest carvings, most dating from between 1270-80.
This is the meeting place of the Dean and Chapter, the governing body of the Minster. The statutes which govern the organisation have changed very little since they were first established by Thomas of Bayeux. All canons have an equal voice in decision making, the Dean being 'the first among equals'. Each wall contains six seats, making it impossible for the Dean to sit at the head of a meeting.
