The Choir

In common with many cathedrals, York Minster has a choir that is enclosed by screens. The Choir, York MinsterThe choir is the traditional place for services to be sung and is the location of both the cathedra (seat) of the Archbishop and the stalls for the Chapter.

Above the stalls are plaques - originally created to protect the wood from the hair oil of the canons - these illustrate, with an heraldic or symbolic design, the saint associated with the prebendal churches.

All the woodwork in the choir had to be replaced following a fire in 1829. The organ was refurbished in 1993 and now contains over 5,300 pipes.
