In common with many cathedrals, York Minster has a choir that is enclosed by screens. Above the stalls are plaques - originally created to protect the wood from the hair oil of the canons - these illustrate, with an heraldic or symbolic design, the saint associated with the prebendal churches. All the woodwork in the choir had to be replaced following a fire in 1829. The organ was refurbished in 1993 and now contains over 5,300 pipes. Walk on to the East End |
