The South Transept

The walk from the east end towards the south transept takes us past the entrance to the crypt where the oldest areas of the Minster can be seen.

The Rose Window, South Transept, York MinsterThe south transept itself was the first part of the Minster to be rebuilt during the archbishopric of Walter Gray (1215-55) and is Early English in style.

The stonework in the rose window dates from 1240 but the glass is much later, added at the end of the War of the Roses (1455-85) to commemorate the Tudor dynasty.

The south transept was the scene of a fire in 1984 when most of the roof was destroyed. The rebuilt roof was constructed using traditional methods with oak ribs locked into place by large ceiling bosses to form the shape of the roof.

We have now reached the end of our tour.
