Welcome to the Museum Gardens and the Historic York Guided Tour. These gardens are a peaceful spot popular with local people and visitors, and contain several interesting features. Take a few minutes to explore the ruins of Saint Mary's Abbey, the first monastic house to be established in Yorkshire after the Norman Conquest. Also well worth a visit is the Yorkshire Museum, containing rich finds from Roman York and housing a fabulous collection of local antiquities.

Leaving the gardens, we stroll up Lendal towards the Mansion House, designed by Richard Boyle and completed in 1726.
Stand here with your back to the wall and look to your left at the large stone building inscribed 'Yorkshire Insurance Co.' Here stood the Praetorian Gate, the principal entrance to the city in Roman Times.
A little forward, to the left of St Helen's Square is the the parish church of St Martins with St Helen, particularly famous for its magnificent fifteenth century stained glass window. |
