Clifford's Tower

Built by William I in 1068 from earth and wood, the original castle structure was destroyed in 1069 by an alliance of locals and Danes in revolt against King William. It was rebuilt almost immediately.

In 1190 the castle was destroyed again, this time by a mob of antisemitic rioters in an attempt to massacre a group of local Jews who had taken refuge within.

The Jews eventually chose to commit mass suicide rather than burn to death, dying 'at each others hands' as a plaque at the base of the tower recounts.

The remains of the keep of the rebuilt castle stand largely untouched on the mound, and are open to the public daily from 9.30am-6.00pm.
