Historic York - A Guided Tour Through A Beautiful City

Fishergate Postern

A massive square building just beyond Castle Mills Bridge, the Fishergate Postern served as the main defence for this area of the city walls.

It is unclear whether it was built at the same time as the original wall or added a century later when the walls were restored. At the time of construction the waters of the river Foss reached the base of the tower but are now, except in times of severe flood, much lower.
