The Old Roman Temple

Beside the river near the foot of Lendal bridge is the location of a large Roman temple.

During excavations in 1989 more than 1000 bronze coins, a gold ear-ring, a jet signet ring, an engraving of a swan and evidence of sacrificial offering were among the objects found.

Built in 180AD, it is believed the temple was dedicated to the Roman gods Jupiter and Bacchus.
